Planting apple trees.
November 18, 2008
I am still able to dig holes, but that’s about all. I’ll be in and out of the house regularly to lie down. I’ll force myself to get up and make some petty, mean spirited swipe at any neo-Confederates, because it’s the force of habit: other than that I’ve got a zombie movie going on right here, and it’s a documentary.
I’m penning my reminiscences now, because I don’t want to be accused of making things up in my dotage by my children.

I finally rec’d the hazelnut trees I ordered in May from the Arbor Day Foundation, but we’re expecting our 4th snow of the season tonight, so I can’t plant them outside. I have them in a big pot in the house. Do you think they’ll last until spring? They look like little sticks, but I can see tiny nodes on them, now, that could be the beginnings of branches. Just don’t know.
My wife says you can store them on the south side of the house. Just make sure they get water. They want to get a little cold, since they’re deciduous trees.
I was out digging today, and digging and digging.
Anything we plant has to be fenced from the sheep, so I’ve been digging the postholes for intermittent cedar posts to stiffen a T-post fence.
And I got the posts all set today!
Tomorrow I’ll actually start digging the holes for twenty-five apple and four fig trees.
